Whitney Houston: "The Star-Spangled Banner"

September 11, 2001 was still a vivid memory when the Super Bowl the following January was played. Officials were wanting to make this singing of the national anthem special. They agreed only one person could do the song justice at that critical time in history.

Whitney Houston took the famous song and made it a spectacle of epic proportions. When does a song sung as many times as "The Star-Spangled Banner" bring the world to tears? It did with Houston's version, and the reaction was so great that Houston's record company was forced to re-release it as a single. It then proceeded to make the national charts (it peaked at 6 on Billboard), an unprecedented feat. Days and weeks after the performance, the song continued to garner huge radio airplay and it still sells well to this day.  All proceeds from sales of the single went to firefighters and murder victims of September 11.
