The Top Love Songs of the Rock Era*: #70-61

The songs get bigger, and the feelings stronger, as we continue to celebrate The Top Love Songs of the Rock Era*.  Today, we add ten more songs to the list:

#70:

'"Happy Together"
Turtles

The man in this song confesses that "he thinks about her day and night", and that "the only one for her is him, and her for him."  That is what Valentine's Day is for.

Imagine me and you,
 I do.
I think about you day and night.
It's only right
To think about the girl you love,
 And hold her tight,
So happy together.

If I should call you up,
 invest a dime,
And you say you belong to me,
It'd ease my mind.
Imagine how the world could be
So very fine,
So happy together.

I can't see me lovin' nobody but you for all my life!
When you're with me, baby,
the skies will be blue for all my life.
Me and you, and you and me,
No matter how they tossed the dice,
 It had to be.
The only one for me is you,
 And you for me ,
So happy together.

I can't see me lovin' nobody but you for all my life!
When you're with me, baby,
the skies will be blue for all my life .
Me and you, and you and me ,
No matter how they tossed the dice,
 It had to be.
The only one for me is you,
And you for me ,
So happy together .

Ba, ba-ba, ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba
Ba-ba-ba-ba-ba
Ba, ba-ba, ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba
Ba-ba-ba-ba-ba

Me and you, and you and me ,
No matter how they tossed the dice ,
It had to be.
The only one for me is you ,
And you for me,
So happy together .

So happy together,
And how is the weather?
 So happy together,
We're happy together.

 So happy together,
We're happy together.
So happy together,
So happy together.

#69:

"Lovin' You"
Minnie Riperton

Minnie Riperton died at the tragically young age of 31 of breast cancer, but before that, she gave the world this #1.  In this model love song, the female declares her innermost feelings for her man.  She says that "everything that she (does) is out of lovin' him".

Lovin' you is easy ,cause you're beautiful;
Makin' love with you is all I wanna' do.
Lovin' you is more than just a dream come true,
And everything that I do, is out of lovin' you.

La la la la la la la... do do do do do...

No one else can make me feel
The colors that you bring.
Stay with me while we grow old,
And we will live each day in springtime.

'Cause lovin' you has made my life so beautiful,
And every day my life is filled with lovin' you.

Lovin' you, I see your soul come shinin' through,
And every time that we, oooooh...
I'm more in love with you!

La la la la la la la... do do do do do...

#68:

"And I Love Her"
Beatles

The man in this song praises his woman for "giving him everything", and declares that "a love like theirs could never die".

I give her all my love;
That's all I do.
And if you saw my love,
You'd love her too.
I love her.

She gives me everything,
And tenderly,
The kiss my lover brings,
She brings to me.
And I love her.

A love like ours
Could never die.
As long as I
Have you near me.

Bright are the stars that shine,
Dark is the sky,
I know this love of mine
Will never die.
And I love her.

Bright are the stars that shine,
Dark is the sky,
I know this love of mine
Will never die.
And I love her.

#67:

"Annie's Song"
John Denver

This incredible superstar used imagery in his songs as well as nearly anyone.  He describes what his lover does to him in great detail, saying "she fills up his senses like a night in the forest..."  He wants to "drown in her laughter, to die in her arms".

You fill up my senses like a night in the forest,
like the mountains in springtime, like a walk in the rain,
like a storm in the desert, like a sleepy blue ocean.
You fill up my senses, come fill me again.

Come let me love you, let me give my life to you.
Let me drown in your laughter; let me die in your arms.
Let me lay down beside you; let me always be with you.
Come let me love you, come love me again.

You fill up my senses like a night in the forest,
like the mountains in springtime, like a walk in the rain,
like a storm in the desert, like a sleepy blue ocean.
You fill up my senses, come fill me again.

#66:

"Come Away With Me"
Norah Jones

Norah Jones paints a great picture here of romantic encounters she has planned for her lover.  She says that if he will just "come away with her", whether that is in the night, on a bus, "in fields where the yellow grass grows knee-high", "on a mountaintop", or "waking up with the rain falling on the tin roof", everything will be right.

Come away with me in the night.
Come away with me,
And I will write you a song.

Come away with me on a bus.
Come away where they can't tempt us
 With their lies.

I want to walk with you
  On a cloudy day,
In fields where the yellow grass grows knee-high.
So won't you try to come.

Come away with me, and we'll kiss
On a mountaintop.
Come away with me,
And I'll never stop loving you.

And I want to wake up with the rain
Falling on a tin roof,
While I'm safe there in your arms.
So all I ask is for you
To come away with me in the night.
 Come away with me...

#65:

"Too Much Heaven"
Bee Gees

The protagonist in this #1 smash recognizes that true love is hard to find.  But in this lover, he says that they "got a lot of love in store", and that "everything they are will never die!".

[CHORUS:]
Nobody gets too much heaven no more--
 It's much harder to come by;
 I'm waiting in line.
Nobody gets too much love anymore--
It's as high as a mountain, And harder to climb.

Oh, you and me girl,
Got a lot of love in store,
And it flows through you,
 And it flows through me,
And I love you so much more.

Then my life..
I can see beyond forever,
Everything we are will never die!
 Loving's such a beautiful thing.
Oh, you make my world.. a summer day.
Are you just a dream to fade away?

[Chorus]

You and me girl got a highway to the sky.
We can turn away from the night and day,
And the tears you had to cry.
You're my life..

I can see a new tomorrow.
Everything we are will never die!
 Loving's such a beautiful thing...
When you are to me, the light above,
Made for all to see our precious love

.[Chorus]

Love is such a beautiful thing.
You make my world a summer day.
Are you just a dream to fade away?

[Chorus]

 Nobody gets too much love anymore;
It's as wide as a river and harder to cross.

[Chorus - repeat and fade]

#64:
Billy Joel

In this great love song, the man says that no matter how far he and his lover have come, he still "sees her" in the deepest meaning if those words.  He declares his love in good times and bad times.  But most of all, he believes she is perfect for him "just the way she is".

 Don't go changing, to try and please me;
You never let me down before.
Don't imagine you're too familiar,
And I don't see you anymore.

 I would not leave you in times of trouble;
We never could have come this far.
I took the good times, I'll take the bad times,
I'll take you just the way you are.

Don't go trying some new fashion;
Don't change the color of your hair.
You always have my unspoken passion,
Although I might not seem to care.

I don't want clever conversation;
I never want to work that hard.
I just want someone that I can talk to;
I want you just the way you are.

I need to know that you will always be
The same old someone that I knew.
What will it take 'till you believe in me
The way that I believe in you?

I said I love you, and that's forever,
And this I promise from my heart.
I couldn't love you any better;
I love you just the way you are.

#63:

"In The Still Of The Night"
Five Satins

We're up to some great doo-wop love for you characteristic of the Rock Era in its infancy.  The man at position #63 fondly remembers "that night in May", and hopes and prays "to keep her precious love".

In the still of the night,
I held you, held you tight.
'Cause I love, love you so,
Promise I'll never let you go.
In the still of the night...

(In the still of the night)

I remember that night in May;
The stars were bright above.
I'll hope, and I'll pray
To keep your precious love

Well before the light,
Hold me again with all of your might,
In the still of the night...
(In the still of the night)

So before the light,
Hold me again with all of your might,
In the still of the night...
(In the still of the night)
In the still of the night...

#62:

“I Just Called to Say I Love You”
Stevie Wonder

This lover cleverly goes through the calendar of holidays and special moments to say that he "just called to say he loves her."  He says that he cares for her "from the bottom of his heart".

No New Year's Day to celebrate
No chocolate covered candy hearts to give away
No first of spring
No song to sing
In fact here's just another ordinary day

No April rain
No flowers bloom
No wedding Saturday within the month of June
But what it is, is something true
Made up of these three words that I must say to you

I just called to say I love you
I just called to say how much I care
I just called to say I love you
And I mean it from the bottom of my heart

No summer's high
No warm July
No harvest moon to light one tender August night
No autumn breeze
No falling leaves
Not even time for birds to fly to southern skies

No Libra sun
No Halloween
No giving thanks to all the Christmas joy you bring
But what it is, though old so new
To fill your heart like no three words could ever do

I just called to say I love you
I just called to say how much I care, I do
I just called to say I love you
And I mean it from the bottom of my heart

I just called to say I love you
I just called to say how much I care, I do
I just called to say I love you
And I mean it from the bottom of my heart, of my heart,
of my heart

I just called to say I love you
I just called to say how much I care, I do
I just called to say I love you
And I mean it from the bottom of my heart, of my heart,
baby of my heart!

#61:

"Heaven"
Bryan Adams

The man in this song writes about a woman with whom he has been a lot together ("in their younger years").  He says that "he has found love there in her heart" and "Now their dreams are comin' true, through the good times and the bad.

Oh - thinkin' about all our younger years,
There was only you and me,
We were young and wild and free.

Now, nothin' can take you away from me,
We've been down that road before,
But that's over now,
You keep me comin' back for more.

And baby, you're all that I want,
When you're lyin' here in my arms.
I'm findin' it hard to believe
We're in heaven.

And love is all that I need,
And I found it there in your heart.
It isn't too hard to see
We're in heaven.

Oh - once in your life you find someone,
Who will turn your world around,
Bring you up when you're feelin' down...

Yeah - nothin' could change what you mean to me.
Oh, there's lots that I could say,
But just hold me now,
'Cause our love will light the way.

And baby, you're all that I want,
When you're lyin' here in my arms.
I'm findin' it hard to believe
We're in heaven.

And love is all that I need,
And I found it there in your heart.
It isn't too hard to see
We're in heaven.

I've been waitin' for so long,
For somethin' to arrive
For love to come along...

Now our dreams are comin' true,
Through the good times and the bad.
Yeah - I'll be standin' there by you.

And baby, you're all that I want,
When you're lyin' here in my arms.
I'm findin' it hard to believe
We're in heaven.

And love is all that I need,
And I found it there in your heart.
It isn't too hard to see
We're in heaven, heaven, oooh...

You're all that I want;
You're all that I need.

We're in heaven.
We're in heaven.
We're in heaven...
